Why is the PC configuration important?

There are a variety of PCs available in today's marketplace. There
are scores of possible hardware and software configurations. Many
issues with products on Windows can be resolved by obtaining
complete information on the configuration of the PC selected to run
an Oracle product on MS-Windows. This document provides a template
that will assist clients in providing complete and useful
information to Oracle Worldwide Support on the configuration of
their PC's. All information requested in this template can be
provided as plain ASCII text. Even though some of this information
may be excessive or redundant, Oracle encourages you to provide as
much of this information as possible with a reasonable effort!
Even if some of this information is not relevant to your current
issue, you may need it in the future.

Where do I send this information?

You can make this information available to Oracle Worldwide Support
via your Oracle Customer Support Representative. You may be able to
provide this information conveniently through Internet email/modem.
If you are making this information available to any of the Desktop
Support groups (Microsoft, Novell or OS2 groups, you can optionally
FAX this information to 415-506-7822. Be sure to include the
following information on the cover page.

     o Name of Sender:
     o Name of Company:
o Name of Oracle Support Representative:
     o TAR Number:

Please use the FAX service as the last resort. Electronic means of

What kind of information should I provide?

     o CONFIG.SYS.
     o AUTOEXEC.BAT.
     o Other DOS batch files.
     o WIN.INI.
     o SYSTEM.INI.
     o DOS Environment.
     o Memory usage.
     o Logical Drive Mappings.
     o ORACLE.INI.
     o WINDOWS.RGS.
     o Hardware.
o Software (Operating System, Networking drivers etc..).

DOS configuration files:
************************

Note: For the sake of illustration, this document will assume that
MS-Windows is installed in C:\WINDOWS and Oracle products are
       installed in C:\ORAWIN.

1. CONFIG.SYS

This file is typically located in root directory of the starting
drive on the PC. It provides useful information on the memory
managers being used, device drivers being loaded, and other
    parameters for customizing MS-DOS.

Location: Root directory of starting drive, typically,
         C:\CONFIG.SYS

2. AUTOEXEC.BAT

This file is used at startup to load programs, set program
variables with the SET statement, the DOS PATH etc..

Location: Root directory of starting drive, typically,
         C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

3. Other Batch files

Many PCs invoke other batch files from the AUTOEXEC.BAT to
perform tasks every time the PC boots. Typically, these batch
files are invoked with the CALL statement or by invoking the name
    of the .BAT file.

    Examples of batch files:

         o CALL C:\BAT\MYNET.BAT
         o C:\LOGIN.BAT

DOS Environment:
****************

1. Complete information on the DOS environment can be obtained by
using the SET internal DOS command. You can redirect this
information to an ASCII text file using the '>' operator. You
can issue the following command at the DOS prompt. Be sure to
completely exit MS-Windows before issuing this command.

         SET > ENV.TXT

2. Information on memory can be obtained by using the MEM command.
You can issue the following command at the DOS prompt. Again, be
sure to exit MS-Windows prior to issuing this command.

         MEM/C > MEM.TXT

3. Information on logical drive mappings can usually be obtained
readily with a command provided by your network vendor. For
example, the MAP command gives you the information for Novell
Netware LANs. Contact your network administrator for help on
    obtaining this information.

MAP > MAP.TXT (for Novell Netware LANs)

MS-Windows Configuration files:
*******************************

1. WIN.INI

    Location: C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI

2. SYSTEM.INI

    Location: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI

Oracle Configuration files:
***************************

1. ORACLE.INI

If you have installed any Oracle product on MS-Windows, you
should have this file in the MS-Windows home directory.

    Location: C:\WINDOWS\ORACLE.INI

2. WINDOWS.RGS

This file keeps a record of Oracle products installed under
    MS-Windows.

    Location: C:\ORAWIN\ORAINST\WINDOWS.RGS
